All advocates at MSAP whether voluntary or paid, use training provided by the organisation together with their life experience to help speak up for others.

Advocates training covers such matters as community care issues, benefit entitlements and rights under the Mental Health Act.

Advocates work in partnership with people but will not make decisions for people.

Volunteer advocates often have personal experience of mental health problems perhaps having previously suffered themselves or knowing a friend or relative that has suffered.

All advocates, paid or volunteers, undergo training prior to working with clients.

‘Criminal Record Background’ (CRB) check is carried out on all advocates.
